Belgium-based Agfa HealthCare joins IBM Watson Health collaborative

PARCA eNews – July 18, 2016 – Agfa HealthCare has signed on with IBM’s Watson Health medical imaging collaborative, which includes 15 leading health systems, academic medical centers, radiology providers and imaging technology companies.

In it’s June 22, 2016 announcement, Agfa said the effort aims to bring cognitive imaging into clinical practice by aiding doctors treating patients with breast, lung and other cancers, as well as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and other diseases.

The idea is to extract insights from previously unstructured imaging data and combine it with a broad variety of data from other sources including electronic health records, radiology and pathology, lab results, progress notes, medical journals and clinical care guidelines. The hope is that information gleaned from this broad range of sources will help physicians make personalized decisions for patients.

The organization’s plans include training Watson and evaluating potential new offerings in a variety of patient care environments ranging from stand-alone ambulatory care settings to integrated health system networks.

"With an ability to draw insights from massive volumes of integrated structured and unstructured data sources, cognitive computing could transform how clinicians diagnose, treat and monitor patients," said Anne Le Grand, vice president of Imaging for Watson Health. "Through IBMs medical imaging collaborative, Watson may create opportunities for radiologists to extract greater insights and value from imaging data while better managing costs."
