Survey shows high cost of cyberattacks

PARCA eNews – Jan. 15, 2019 – The average cost of cyberattacks over the past two years topped $1.1 million, according to Radware, a cybersecurity provider.

The company issued its 2018-2019 Global Application and Network Security Report that shows for organizations that calculate (versus estimate) the cost of an attack, the average cost was $1.67 million. Most of that cost (54%) were in operational and productivity losses. The report also estimated the cost of negative customer experience.

Almost half (45%) of the attacks aimed to disrupt services, while 35% were aimed at data theft. The annual report has compiled survey data
for eight years from IT executives spanning several industries including healthcare.

Overall the report found that most organizations have experienced some type of attack within the course of a year, with only 7% of respondents claiming no attacks during the period. In addition data leakage and information loss remain the biggest concern to more than 35% of businesses, followed by service outages. Hackers increase their usage of emerging attack vectors to bring down networks and data centers.

Respondents reporting HTTPS floods grew from 28% to 34%. Reports of DNS attacks grew from 33% to 38%. Two-thirds of respondents experienced application-layer DoS attacks.

In terms of where cybersecurity is heading, 86% of companies indicated they are exploring machine-learning and artificial intelligence solutions, with quicker response time and better security driving those explorations.
