European Radiologists compile wish list for meeting tech change challenges

PARCA eNews – March 7, 2016 – At the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) meeting March 2-6, 2016 in Vienna, Professor Boris Brkljačić from Zagreb and Prof. Davide Caramella from Pisa led a discussion of the technological changes and modernization challenges facing radiology administrators.

The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) is the annual meeting of more than 63,000 individual members of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) working across Europe and beyond and provides a broad international perspective on issues in healthcare imaging.

As reported by Cynthia Keen of the ECR Daily News they compiled a wishlist for technological change. Below are a few of the highlights:
  • Embracing eHealth, making access to radiologists and specialist consultants easy and rapid through teleradiology
  • Achieve standardization of imaging protocols, dose reduction initiatives, procedure codes, and radiology lexicon
  • The need for cross-enterprise eHealth communications that would allow individuals living in a European Union member country to travel without restraint to 26 other member countries, but that may be very difficult to attain in the 21st century.
  • Health authorities throughout Europe need to ensure that patients are being examined on state-of-the-art radiology equipment.
  • Decision makers need to prioritize protecting technology investments through a consistent adoption of interoperable standards
  • Change a perception by many healthcare administrators that investment in IT infrastructure can be postponed in favor of more ‘glamorous’ medical innovations. Radiology professionals have led digital and IT innovations and needs to become more vocal in developing a vision for imaging technology and its place in healthcare.
