PARCA eNews – Mar. 5, 2015 – Successful connection of various vendor's radiation producing equipment to Radiation Exposure Monitoring Systems (REMS) is a challenge and integration into hospital or radiology information systems (HIS/RIS) introduces further layers of difficulty.
As Aunt Minnie writer Erik Ridley reports, an Irish research group showed that a web-based dose tracking software could track and analyze CT studies, while German group showed that a cloud-based system using DICOM structured reports was a feasible alternative for dose tracking.
The Irish researchers evaluated GE Health care system’s DoseWatch product. They found that among 576 randomly selected thoracic and abdominopelvic CT exams 88 percent had a normal dose range and 12 percent had a dose considered to be high when compared with national diagnostic reference levels.
In the German study of 33,035 CT exams, the average CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) was 45 percent of the national reference value. The researchers concluded that a major advantage to the cloud approach was that cloud solutions enable multicenter dose monitoring, which has the potential to further optimize dosing.
